Purple shampoo works on hair extensions, but you should dilute it. Bleached extension hair is more porous than hair growing from your scalp, so violet pigment deposits faster and can stain. Mix one part purple shampoo into three parts conditioner, leave it on for 60 seconds, then rinse with cool water.

This guide answers the questions salons actually send us. Most toning advice online is written for hair attached to a scalp. Extensions behave differently, and the difference is measurable.

What is purple shampoo and what is actually in it?

Purple shampoo is a cleansing base carrying a violet dye that deposits on the hair surface to cancel yellow. It does not lighten hair. It masks warmth by adding a complementary tone on top of it.

That number matters more than it looks. A 0.35 percent dye load is a real deposit, not a rinse-off tint. On low-porosity hair it grabs lightly and washes out over a few shampoos. On highly porous hair it can hold.

Violet sits opposite yellow on the colour wheel, which is why it neutralises brass. Blue sits opposite orange. That distinction decides which product you reach for, and we come back to it below.

Purple shampoo dilution and timing by extension type

Start weaker than you think you need. You can always tone again. Removing violet stain from a bleached weft takes work.

Dilute with conditioner rather than water. Water thins the pigment but also thins the slip, so the mix runs off unevenly and streaks. Conditioner holds the dye in suspension and buys you an even spread.

How to use purple shampoo on hair extensions

Strand test on a hidden weft. Take one piece from the nape or an offcut, run the full process, and dry it. Wet hair reads several shades cooler than it will look dry. Judge the result dry, never wet.
Mix your dilution. One part purple shampoo into three parts conditioner for most extension types. Go to one part in four for #613 and platinum.
Wet the hair with cool water. Cold water keeps the cuticle flatter, which slows pigment uptake and gives you more control over the endpoint.
Apply mid-length to ends only. The oldest, most porous hair sits at the ends. Keep the product away from bonds, tape tabs and weft tracks.
Time it with a clock. Set 60 seconds. Do not judge by eye while it develops, because wet violet always looks stronger than the dry result.
Rinse cool and fully. Rinse until the water runs clear. Residual violet keeps depositing after you leave the shower.
Follow with a bond or protein treatment. Extensions cannot repair themselves. Replace what the wash took out.

How to fix hair extensions stained by purple shampoo

Over-toning shows up as a lilac or grey-violet cast, usually worst at the ends. It happens when hair is too porous for the dilution used, or when the product sat too long. On extensions it is more common than on scalp hair for exactly the reasons above.

Work through these in order and stop as soon as the cast clears.

Clarifying shampoo, two rounds. Lather, leave 3 minutes, rinse. Most fresh violet stain lifts here.
Warm water and a deep conditioner. Heat swells the fibre and helps release surface dye. Apply conditioner, cover, leave 20 minutes.
Chelating treatment. Effective when hard water or mineral buildup has locked the pigment in.
Book a colourist. If violet persists past those steps it has penetrated the cortex. A professional colour remover on extension hair is not a home job.

Skip the internet remedies. Baking soda, dish soap and lemon juice all raise or crash the pH on hair that has no scalp oil to buffer it. On a bleached weft that trade is not worth making.

How often should you use purple shampoo on extensions?

Once every two to three washes suits most blonde extensions. Scalp hair tolerates weekly use; extensions rarely need that much because nothing is regrowing to re-introduce warmth at the root.

Let the hair set the schedule. Tone when you see yellow returning, not on a fixed calendar. Alternate with a sulphate-free colour-safe shampoo, and watch for two signals that you have overdone it: a violet or grey cast in daylight, or a squeaky, straw-like feel through the mid-lengths. Either one means stop and deep condition.

Sun, chlorine and hard water all accelerate brassiness. UV raises porosity within hours of exposure, so a beach week will undo weeks of careful toning. A hat does more for your blonde than another wash will.

Toning starts with the hair you buy

No shampoo corrects a weft that was over-processed at the factory. Hair lifted too fast, or built from mixed donors with reversed cuticles, will grab pigment unevenly no matter how carefully you dilute. That problem is bought, not washed in.
